Here are some of the stories I'd like to have the opportunity to cover (and I'm trying to be realistic rather than hoping for headlines like "Gas prices fall to $1.30 per gallon."
City to build theater building on lease-purchase plan
- Evidently, this project is still in the works, so I'm not giving up hope
Rotary begins construction of new Washington monument
- I think this would be one of the greatest new developments in Washington for some time. Something to put on a post card. They are still working on this and I hope to hear more about it soon.
Pool vote passes on second try
– I believe a little legwork by some supportive volunteers will get this necessity passed, even without drastic reductions in the plans.
Deli opens on courthouse square
- I know restaurant owners don't like to hear us talk about a need for more dining options, but I think this is a food segment that is missing in town.
Enrollments show stability across county
– Maybe this is a dream headline, but I really look forward to the day when all of the schools either see increases or no decreases.
New fair barn to be built in 2009
- I would love to see the fair board have success with their new livestock barn effort. Our fair is one of the county's greatest events, so progress with their facilities would be great. They should also hang curtains on the stool stalls at the restroom south of the rock barn.
Pat Bruna to continue local fireworks efforts
- Pat didn't know whether or not he'd be able to continue organizing the fireworks displays at Hanover Fourth of July and other area events now that he is working in KC. His skills are remarkable and it would be a shame to lose his talent.
All for now.

Headlines I'd like to see you write:
1.Washington Jail pays for itself..
2.Washington gets sensible about a pool....
3.County schools show increase in numbers....
4.Washington Hospital unites with Marysville hospital....
Wow td what planet are you from?
County schools won't have an increase in enrollment unless the county progresses with the times. The hospital being the major issue I take with your statement I'll start there. Marysville is in the progress of building a new hospital themselves, do you really see them trying to keep this one open if they were to join. Why would they pour the tons of money it would take to rehab the OLD building we have here when they could just close it and everyone could come to the nice new facility in Marysville. Result; loss of jobs, loss of revenue, and who wants to move to a community that can't even keep it's existing hospital.
To have growth you must have a solid infrastructure, emergency services, hospitals, streets and, oh yes, PARKS! This would include the pool. If you had payed attention to the pool comittee you would have noted that the cost was not raised that much by the "bells and whistles" but now we will pay more for less because we didn't pass it the fist time, that's sensible.
So let Dan write your headlines, by then he can probably deliver the News to his customers by hand himself.
mom: you might check to verify this, but I seem to recall that several years ago Marysville tendered an offer to Washington and were interested in keepig the washington unit open as satelite clinic. Of course our administrator and board didn't even consider the proposal. This might be better than no hospital and no doctor, which I think is where we are headed down the road.
I might also add; I never heard of anyone choosing a community to live in because of its swimming pool and playground. Takes more than that to make a town grow.
rluoMarysville is a community hospital, not a county one, so the federal funds we get for the county hospital would be gone. And a few years ago all Marysville was going to keep open as a satelite was the clinic. So again goodbye jobs and revenue. Maybe you should thank the administrator and board of directors for not letting that happen. Part of the slogan for the fundraising in Marysville is to provide healthcare to Marshall Co. and neighboring counties. Their practicioners are already streched between Blue Rapids, Marysville and Wymore, Neb., so which one(s) do you think would want to spread him/her self thinner to come here? Have no doubt though that they will gladly accept any and all Washington County patients to their new facillity. You seem to have forgotten the enormous amout of money it will take to update the old building we currently have. (Really just a case of good money after bad.) You do the math, add on for more space, fix the roof, new heating and airconditioning, rewire the building and the list goes on and on. As for no Dr. maybe the people of the community should get involved in looking for one, after all, they will be the ones left out in the cold when Dr. Hodgson retires.
As for moving here because of the pool and playground, of course no one would base their decision solely on those two things. However, young parents will certianly look more favorably on a community that is kid friendly, and the outward appearance of playgrounds and a pool would go a long way toward projecting that image. It would go hand-in-hand with our new school.
Well said, -mom.
Having just had some tests done at the Washington County Hospital today, and a daughter with a broken arm a few months ago and some stitches to a cut on my hand several months ago, I'm sure happy to have a hospital and top-notch staff within six minutes from my home. While my three year old daughter was screaming in pain (on a Sunday), I would not have wanted to drive to Marysville. And today's tests would have been majorly inconvenient too.
Combine the hospitals? Why not combine county commissions... or the sheriff's department... or anything else. Why not just give up and everyone move to Marysville? I like Marysville, but I for one want to focus on what's best for the future of our county, not the county next door.
"td" should try considering a future for Washington rather than a future for everyone else.
