County fair reaction
I'm curious what people liked or disliked about this year's fair since there were several changes, including the parade route, several livestock show changes, etc. I'd like to hear the good and the bad.
Can't comment on the livestock shows as I didn't take them in, but, I don't like the parade route. It is so unhandy for seniors and handicapped. Oh yeah, there was reserved parking for them south of the pool, if they could get there and find a place to park. And then, how could they get to the 4-H building if they wanted?? There was a food tent blocking the walkway at the north side of the tennis courts. Very poor planing there. Not having a carnival is still a sore point with younger people. I talked to some who took their kids to Belleville because they had "a real carnival".
Overall I thought the fair was a success this year however I too am not in favor of the new parade route. I guess my biggest question is, why the change? I believe in tradition ( I still think the parade route should go south to 6th street, west to d street and then back to the high school) but at the very least making a trip around the square as it used to. I did go to the parade but no one can convince me that the turnout was any better, it wasn't. I can't say whether the fair board was successful in their desire to get more people to the fairgrounds by moving the parade but I would argue with anybody that the parade turnout was WAY down. I've also heard numerous people say their organization decided not to build a float this year because they didn't want to go to all the trouble for only 1 night. Another lost traditon, one night instead of 2..and why can't Washington ever get a nice carnival again, and maybe a beer garden? I've been to Hanover and Linn (I don't drink), but when run properly the turnout can be absolutely amazing. I hope the fair board reconsiders and puts the parade back downtown.
Also, I heard the city made the ambulance move to the hospital in case they got a call during the parade so they could respond without being trapped by the parade entrants. Anyone know if that is true? What if there was a call at the fairgrounds, would they have had to go all they way to the hospital to get the ambulance to come back to the fairgrounds?
